शुक्लाम्बरधरं विष्णुं शशिवर्णं चतुर्भुजम् । प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्वविघ्नोपशान्तये ॥
śuklāmbaradharaṃ viṣṇuṃ śaśivarṇaṃ caturbhujam | prasannavadanaṃ dhyāyet sarvavighnopaśāntaye ||
A short meditation on Vishnu, clad in white and four-armed, for the quieting of obstacles before the recitation.
शान्ताकारं भुजगशयनं पद्मनाभं सुरेशं विश्वाधारं गगनसदृशं मेघवर्णं शुभाङ्गम् । लक्ष्मीकान्तं कमलनयनं योगिभिर्ध्यानगम्यं वन्दे विष्णुं भवभयहरं सर्वलोकैकनाथम् ॥
śāntākāraṃ bhujagaśayanaṃ padmanābhaṃ sureśam viśvādhāraṃ gaganasadṛśaṃ meghavarṇaṃ śubhāṅgam | lakṣmīkāntaṃ kamalanayanaṃ yogibhirdhyānagamyaṃ vande viṣṇuṃ bhavabhayaharaṃ sarvalokaikanātham ||
Vishnu is remembered as the peaceful Lord who rests on the serpent, bears the worlds, and removes the fear of becoming.
सशङ्खचक्रं सकिरीटकुण्डलं सपीतवस्त्रं सरसीरुहेक्षणम् । सहारवक्षःस्थलशोभिकौस्तुभं नमामि विष्णुं शिरसा चतुर्भुजम् ॥
saśaṅkhacakraṃ sakirīṭakuṇḍalaṃ sapītavastraṃ sarasīruhekṣaṇam | sahāravakṣaḥsthaśobhikaustubhaṃ namāmi viṣṇuṃ śirasā caturbhujam ||
The devotee bows to the four-armed Lord who bears the conch and discus and wears the Kaustubha on his chest.
विश्वं विष्णुर्वषट्कारो भूतभृत् भूतकृद् भवः । भूतात्मा भूतभावनोऽथ पूतात्मा परमात्मा च ॥
viśvaṃ viṣṇurvaṣaṭkāro bhūtabhṛt bhūtakṛd bhavaḥ | bhūtātmā bhūtabhāvano'tha pūtātmā paramātmā ca ||
The hymn begins by naming Vishnu as the universe itself, the bearer of beings, and the Supreme Self.
अव्ययः पुरुषः साक्षी क्षेत्रज्ञोऽक्षर एव च । योगो योगविदां नेता प्रधानपुरुषेश्वरः ॥
avyayaḥ puruṣaḥ sākṣī kṣetrajño'kṣara eva ca | yogo yogavidāṃ netā pradhānapuruṣeśvaraḥ ||
He is named the imperishable Person, the witness, the knower of the field, and the Lord of primordial nature.
